Despecho songs, composed in Latin America between the 1930s and the 1960s, express intense, dramatic feelings of unrequited love. The word despecho refers to the melodramatic style of the lyrics and to the intensity of feeling that is the expressive purpose of these songs. The main genres in which despecho was composed are Peruvian waltzes, Ecuadorian pasillos, Argentine tangos, Cuban boleros, and Mexican rancheras.
